    African American jazz pianist, band leader, and one of the most important composers for small groups in the history of jazz. Born Horace Ward Martin Tavares Silver in Norwalk, Connecticut, Silver played tenor saxophone and piano during his high school years, giving up the sax after a short time. He began playing jazz on the piano and was influenced by pianists Earl Hines, Eddie Heywood, and Teddy Wilson, and later by Bebop pianists Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk. In 1950 he and his trio performed with tenor saxophonist Stan Getz in a Hartford, Connecticut, club. This initial encounter led to a yearlong engagement with Getz, during which time Silver made his first recordings.
